MGMT – Kids (original) & Chiddy Bang – Kids

One of my favourite dance songs ever, MGMT‘s ‘Kids’ just never grates, it’s the perfect indie dance track.

Smooth, energetic, totally sexy, flawlessly written, and flippin’ cool. Not to mention thought-provoking, yet possibly ambiguous lyrics – take what you want from the past, but don’t live in it. Or is it about something completely different such as autism?

It’s the simple, classic chord progression which runs throughout the whole track which makes it so addictive:

F# minor (tonic- I),
D major (sub mediant/relative major – VI)
A major (mediant – III)
E major played in first inversion/starting on the note G# (leading note/subtonic – VII)

And I think I know which bit everyone loves: it’s the arrival on the third chord A major, which then descends (by a semitone) to G# (E major), and then finally onto the tonic, F#. I highlight the E major chord because I really believe that this is the chord which makes the song, the bit that everyone loves.

What are your thoughts on this? Would you agree but never realised until it was broken down in front of you that this may well be the part that makes the track?

I’m clearly not the only one who thinks the single is great, as the ever innovative Chiddy Bang samples Kids in a very exciting way. It almost feels like a remix. The new snare sound is killer.

*UPDATE* – listen to the EP version by MGMT as linked to by Michael by clicking on the comments for this post. Very different!

Mass, awesome blog!'Kids' is amazing but you've got to check out the EP version (from the Time to Pretend EP, which for some reason is the only record of theirs i have). I really prefer it:

Better drums, much more bass which properly pumps the track, less trebly live-sounding vocals, extended instrumental riff after the bridge at 3m which is quality … i think (hope i'm not hearing things) the main riff is a semi-tone higher for some reason as well.

Thanks Mike, much appreciated!I'm just listening now to the EP version. I prefer this version too, thanks for the link. You're right: the extra bass, better blended vocals and that extra riff is great too. It's a shame when tracks are mega-produced and the raw-er version is forgotten about.Really like it in its higher pitch too!
